"I always felt it was too easy to look at the news of something happening somewhere else and just sit and change the channel."
Especially in the times we live in I think many of us are trying to escape the reality and the magnitude of the events happening not only here but in other parts of the world. Or many of us see others being targeted and don’t feel the gravity of situation since it isn’t happening to us or around us. It’s easy to just turn a blind eye but that doesn’t benefit anyone
'Art can go places other people cannot"
This quote made me think of that activist performance that was done in China where a couple dressed in their wedding attire and took wedding pictures with gas masks to show the immense air pollution. The only reason they weren’t shut down was because it was seen as a performance and not a protest.
Marina Abramovic - Royal Academy
“She also said ‘I am the object’ and interestingly most of the audience or participants were men.”
Her performance “Rhythm 0” is very reminiscent of “Cut Piece” by Yoko Ono. Both giving up their autonomy and putting it in the hands of the audience and seeing how far they go. Abramovic’s performance was way more risky since it invited anyone to do whatever they wanted to her with a set of items. But both push the boundaries of how far will someone go even with a set of rules.
Her Perspective / Legacy
“It’s really interesting to see how the performance can be present in the museum, live”
I think it’s interesting to see how performances are archived, many are just photographs, while others are recorded and are able to watched, time and time again. Performance is tricky because photographs are (in my opinion) not a great way to capture the feeling of the audience, performers, and overall feeling of the room.
Perennial Land
I thought the installation was super cool, it really felt like an immersive experience. The film shown was a longer version of the video we had watched the week before but gave more details. For example it spoke about the Liberty State Park which I thought was a nice inclusion to connect to a Jersey audience. The interactive portion of the installation was really fun, I know that the creators said it was not completely done but the effects so far were really good. I also thought it was interesting to see 4 different scenarios and backgrounds. I think by having that interactive part the audience was able to connect more with the installations. Overall an installation worth anyone’s time.
