primitive games

"There were moments after a workshop-emotionally intense moments ... in which I had to be completely poised as a vessel for all of these narratives and immediately following the workshop I had to think and collect myself on a random corner before I went home."
- shaun leonardo, the artist felt that he got sucked into the event. additionally, he couldn't remember who was who during the performance. he, also, expressed amazement at the sessions' intensity and impact on him personally in a post-workshop reflection.
findings/participants
"None of us knew the subject and how emotionally intense it was. How I felt that in my body, I always remembered the filters [Leonardo] gave us. [!] carried that through the evening. Surprised at how I felt physically."
- intense emotions were high within the participants, when team captains reflected on the performance, they were shocked by the event's emotional and physical toll. in the responses to the retrospective-pre assessment, there was indication of a change in the participants' viewpoints (on topics/ideas) and on behavioral changes.
findings/audience
"It seems that there could have been more clarification with the various elements. Why was the face paint for the viewers relevant? How does it tie into the issues concerned?”
- i understand the audiences' confusion on the face paint, how does the face paint relate to the social issues that's being performed? several audience members were unclear about what was going on, the purpose of the event, or the lessons they should learn from it. even some of the audience had some paint on their faces, in support of the participants.

"I saw a broader expansion of the way museums can engage with very topical, socially/politically engaged issues, and that you can create a space— a safe space-provide a platform for discussion and dialogue around these issues in ways that are more dynamic than an exhibition of still objects and ideas.”
- the employees observed that the museum could "take risks" to address current topics and provide a "safe space" for conversation "in ways that are more dynamic" than an exhibition. according to some, the museum is "accepting responsibility because they are not just guarding masterworks" through the 'social practice art' initiative.
the primitive games, by shaun leonardo was about the examination on how the discussion has changed throughout time. we now live in a period and place when communication has deteriorated into a self-provident tactic. this performance works by having a series of workshops, divided into four group, each with a interesting topic to a social issue; and get them to a point where they have to argue with each other without speaking. leonardo witnessed a game that appeared to be the most archaic of sports in that it was promoting violence for its own sake. the instructions were to perform, to the audience a specific social issue; it works best the emphasis on the process over the product.
