"You see me but you don't you don't hear me"
About my project
My project is based around how the trump administration has affected black women. In the video is my younger sister who is stands in front of the camera holding a sign that says " you see me but you don't hear me" throughout the last few months of the trump administration which honestly feels like forever thats how most of us black women has been made to feel with some of agendas that trump has been pushing into place. Trump since in office has signed multiple executive orders such as trying to get rid of black history from schools by guting out the department of education in order to "restore truth and sanity to American history" (Tensley, 2025). Trump has also went into the executive orders by dismantling DEI which has disproportionately affected black women after his cuts into DEI black women has faced an increase in job loss and also can affect black women from feeling included in the workplace.
Despite President trumps orders to try and silence us some strong black women showed up and spoke up on our behalf such as Kamala Harris, Jasmine crocket and other strong women in power. The goal of the video was to get some type of emotion from the audience by playing some of the outrageous things that trump has said while his presidency, I decided to use my little sister to portray the everyday emotion of women of color as they go through everyday life in the U.S, throughout the video you will see the transition of emotion from being a very oppressed and lost individual during this time to someone who eventually gains hope during dark times and eventually sees a light at the end of the tunnel. During recording of the clips my sister eventually started to cry after hearing some of the empowering words that Kamala spoke after her losing the presidential election.
I did not have any inspirations from any artists but I did have some inspiration from the video that Professor showed me in class of a previous student.
As someone who not really into Art this project was a bit hard for me which is why I chose to do the video route as well as my overall anxiety. The textbook did give me a few quotes to help me overall overcome my fear of using art as activism:
Quote: "It’s too much pressure. We need to practice, mess around, and make mistakes."
Reaction: While creating this project, I had to pay close attention to some of the placement of my clips to make sure it was aligning with the sound so that way it conveys a stronger message in the video. So sometimes I did make some mistakes but I was able to tweak them around in the end.
Quote: "If our process is rooted in vengeance, fury, hopelessness, or despair, our efforts will likely fail."
Reaction: This quote resonated with me very well because although I could have made this project about how much I don't agree with trump and the policies that he is putting in place i tried to end the video on a lighter not with Kamala Harris and some lighter sounding music, to make the audience feel relieved that even though we may be going through dark times there is still good people out there fighting for us.
Quote: "But having a goal in mind allows us to orient ourselves in the right direction".
Reaction: This was a critical part of my project. I feel like my overall goal was to make you feel emotion wether it be anger with what president trump may have said or relief with Kamala reassuring us with her empowering words.
Quote: "We are artists and activists, not solipsistic bohemian artists isolated in our garrets".
Reaction: This quote stuck with because as much as I was trying to portray a message I feel as though I had to think more like an artist for once and that was challenging enough.
