for my midterm intervention, i decided to delve into the topic of black lives matter and its movement. the black lives matter movement is still a big topic, even after the death of george floyd, breonna taylor, and many other innocent black folks who were murdered by police brutality. the advocacy of black lives is important, to let people know that the black lives matter movement is not a trend, that it’s important to let others know more information on the black lives matter movement, the success of black folks, the amount of money that’s been raised for black families in need, etc. the idea of myself creating an information card on the black lives matter movement, is important. i live, work and go to school, in a diverse community, where black, white, hispanic/latinx, middle eastern, native american, asian american, and many more, all co-exist. i’ve actually learned so much from the black lives matter website; from rosa parking not paying her fines, when she was arrested for not giving up her seat for a white man on a bus to a young black man being murdered by police in 2014.
the idea was to make 3 information cards, but i’ve decided on only creating 2 info cards. the concept was having both information cards with an illustration, one the ‘black lives matter’ that looks like it’s painted on the road, and the other card, with protesters and activists holding up posters and picket signs. i’ve added a qr code on both cards, for people to scan, which takes them to different sections of the website. once scanned, the website will help educate and advocate people who are willing and interested to learn more of the history of black lives and what purpose the movement has served.
sample cards
i was inspired by a painting in kimberly drews tumblr page, an artist named kevin appiah-kubi. his painting “open season” is what inspired me to create the information cards. the painting held up so much history and emotion. the painting is the definition of being black in america. the feeling of having an invisible target on their back, having police stop black people without probable cause, police becoming aggressive when black people are cooperating, having a gun shoved in their face, their hands up, showing the police that they have no weapon. it’s truly a powerful piece, the basic definition of art activism; the hands and the face having a target on them, seeing that police murder black people for simply, existing.
