My midterm zine is going to be on police brutality. The reason why I chose this topic is because of how I myself am a criminal justice major and one thing I never liked about some police officers was how they abuse their power. During my zine I am going to be explaining what police brutality is and what people see, and don’t see. I am going to also be explaining the type of weapons or tools police officers use when they are on duty, and explain how these tools/weapons are being used and have a big impact on individuals because of the damage it can cause to people. During my zine I will also be explaining why police brutality should come to an end, mainly because people will see the department in a wrong way, and fellow officers who do their job correctly and never escalate problems will be getting into problems with individuals. When I was reading the book “Art of Activism” a quote that I found that strongly goes with my zine is “Get the horses, and the dogs” (Chapter 2 Birmingham), After reading and looking at the photos, it shows how officers hosed down African American individuals, and let there K-9 dogs attach them. Another quote that I found is “he would unleash the full fury of the police and fire departments on the protesters for the assembled media to witness and record.” Police officers should never escalate a problem and make it bigger than it already is. There are multiple ways to de-escalate things and handle things properly, and I will be explaining the reason why things should be handled properly and explain how it should be done.
