Midterm Intervention- Angel Gonzales

For my midterm intervention I will be discussing and presenting an issue that is not being addressed enough in today’s world. That issue is homeless veterans in the United States. This situation has been on my mind for quite a while now. I guess since I consider myself patriotic and very much value this country and the men and women who serve it, I find it absolutely disgraceful that this is even a situation. I will display my work on a poster that will include images of memes that relate to homeless veterans. The primary colors that I want on my poster are white, blue, and red as those are the colors of the US flag. The reason I am using memes is because of how common they are and how easy they are to understand. Memes are a big part of today’s society and can address political, racial, or any other type of issue. From the article “What  memes Owe to History,” a quote that stood with me about memes is that they really are "Easy to make, easy to share; instantly recognizable and a little nonsensical; a hilarious and at times sickly-sweet jab at the world’s blunders, scandals, protests, and hypocrisies."  I never really thought about memes this way. Memes really are simple to make yet they can address real life situations in a humorous way. I see memes about everything from sports to shows to politics, they are everywhere. I will also be using statistics on the homelessness rate of veterans in the US. In January of 2024 32,882 veterans were experiencing homelessness in America. There were approximately 19,301 veterans sheltered, while 13,851 were unsheltered. From one of our readings, “An Introduction to Activist Art,” it states "When the public is looking away from suffering that could be prevented or does not want to be confronted with it, activist art often creates a dialogue and forces people to think about these problems." This quote is very true as whenever a crisis is going on in the world, people prefer to look the other way and act as if nothing is happening. This quote also relates to my intervention as many people are looking the other way for homeless veterans and aren’t making enough noise around this crisis. For my project I collected my co worker's opinions on homeless veterans. I asked my co workers what are their thought on this crisis and I shared their statements on the poster.
