Hello \_^o^_/!!
My name is Emmanuel Orellana Monsalve and I am currently a freshmen majoring in Media Arts. I enjoy playing video games and watching anime! My main hobbies that I enjoy doing is collecting figures and biking! I don't think I am an activist right now.
1- Understanding Patriarchy by bell hooks (on BLACKBOARD)
Q1: "At church they had learned that God created man to rule the world and everything in it and that it was the work of women to help men perform these tasks, to obey and to always assume a subordinate role in relation to a powerful man."
R1: When reading this essay this quote stuck out to me and made me think. These circumstances that were put out many years ago made me realize how messed up this is. My first thought was why not treat people the same no matter the gender? Personally, it seems dumb to treat woman as lower person than man, We should just treat everyone the same we are all still human.
Q2: "To indoctrinate boys into the rules of patriarchy, we force them to feel pain and to deny their feelings."
R2: This is another quote that really opened my eyes and made me realize how horrible patriarchy is overall. This once again supports the quote I chose above on how messed up this whole situation. Forcing anyone into following the rules of patriarchy instead of allowing them to follow their own rules is really messed up.
2- What Memes Owe to Art History:
Q1: "Narratives matter.…Pictures don’t speak for themselves,” he said, arguing that memes are not just jokes, but rather have the potential to be more sinister than what meets the eye."
R1: When reading this article this line of really made me pause and think how true it is. When looking at memes there are a lot of them that have hidden messages other than laughing matters.
Q2 "Through humor, memes incite a collective reaction to everyday life as well as reveling in it, in a format no less playful than it is political, decoding the murky structural screw-ups, paradoxes, and hypocrisies of our current political climate."
R2: This is another line that I found very interesting as well that supports that response I have said above. There is many memes that really have messages behind them, even hidden messages you just have to think about.

3- Memes Are Our Generation's Protest Art | VICE
Q1: "At their core, all memes, regardless of their politics, are a tool for expression. “Memes help to articulate specific points, amplify ideas, and intensify emotions,” Burroughs said. “Something can be comedic or a joke and still be incredibly poignant.”"R1: This quote can perfectly explain what memes are and could be used for. Many memes can really help people outside the space to understand what is happening in certain situations.
Q2: ""“You can express yourself with one picture of a meme better than a whole page of text,” Alan Schaaf, the CEO of image-hosting site Imgur, told VICE. “They’re easy to create, reuse, and remix. And what makes them works so well is that they’re so relatable. They make us laugh but have the ability to connect us around a common feeling.”""
R2: This quote truly shows and explains that there are many different ways to express yourself with Art. Memes is one of the greatest and simplest ways to either gained laughs and put out information.
